Week 1, Sept. 8: Which way is up?

Talk about hit the ground running. Our tasks to be completed by mid-week were the requisite introductions and registrations, but across a vast array of tools. I'm really impressed by the cohort that's assembled for this course and I really look forward to learning tips from them. The first tip I'd love to learn is: How do I organize my PLN?? (BTW, this is my first time blogging about a PD experience as it happens.)

Here's what I've done so far.
  • Accessed Ning group, modified My Page (social networking tool, multiple functions)
  • Accessed syllabus pages on PBworks (wiki, content, comments, tags)
  • Created this blog as my reflection journal (tasks, links to relevant content, tags, etc)
Then I was confused as to which direction I go next, what's our homebase or group's common area? I contacted Vance with this question: "I'm a little confused as to where the 'common area' is for our network and our shared discussions, and where I need to post, and how I'll check in with my classmates. There seem to be so many tools being utilized!" Vance suggested keeping "an eportfolio...a front page somewhere with links to your blog posts and reflections on the course."

I just read on Patrick's blog that he's using Google Reader and I'm curious to know if he's getting a feed from all the tools mixed up with this class.

  1. Hi Michele, I've been spending all day with this group, but apart from updating web pages and experimenting with tags (after talking with Patrick on Skype earlier, HE sent me back to the drawing boards) I haven't done much that YOU can see, except I've started connecting with some of the blogs that are starting to crop up from you keen learners.

For Google feed reader the best way to use that is to click on the RSS (or Atom) feed button at the bottom of the blog front page and then add it to reader, as shown here: http://tinyurl.com/googlehomepageorreader. Not sure what you mean by getting "a feed from all the tools mixed up with this class" but you can create a folder in Google Reader and file all the feeds you're following in that folder, and here's how to do that: http://screencast.com/t/YmRkYWI1MDk

  2. Hi Michele,

I haven't used Google Reader before; I just started using it for this class. I signed up for the RSS feeds for the three main sites we are using for this class (goodbyegutenburg, the yahoo group, and the ning). I get all three feeds in Google Reader and can view them separately or all together.

I'll try to apply you what you and Vance found on labels.

    Thanks
    -Patrick

  3. Hi Michele,

I've tried to add your blog to the blogs I'm following within blogspot, but the blog turned down my request. Is it something about the settings you have?

  4. Michelle ~ why not set up a preliminary, perhaps even temp, ePortfolio page by creating another page on this blog just to record all your Multiliteracies / TESOL PP107 cyberplaces?
