Week 1, Sept. 8: Which way is up?

Talk about hit the ground running. Our tasks to be completed by mid-week were the requisite introductions and registrations, but across a vast array of tools. I'm really impressed by the cohort that's assembled for this course and I really look forward to learning tips from them. The first tip I'd love to learn is: How do I organize my PLN?? (BTW, this is my first time blogging about a PD experience as it happens.)

Here's what I've done so far.

• Accessed Ning group, modified My Page (social networking tool, multiple functions)
• Accessed syllabus pages on PBworks (wiki, content, comments, tags)
• Created this blog as my reflection journal (tasks, links to relevant content, tags, etc)

Then I was confused as to which direction I go next, what's our homebase or group's common area? I contacted Vance with this question: "I'm a little confused as to where the 'common area' is for our network and our shared discussions, and where I need to post, and how I'll check in with my classmates. There seem to be so many tools being utilized!" Vance suggested keeping "an eportfolio...a front page somewhere with links to your blog posts and reflections on the course."

I just read on Patrick's blog that he's using Google Reader and I'm curious to know if he's getting a feed from all the tools mixed up with this class.

Hi ya!

My name is Michele and I've been working in adult ESL and EFL since 1998 and I love it! I'm currently the instructional technology coordinator for an adult ESL program in Arlington, VA. I also teach and manage professional development activities for technology integration as well as e-learning initiatives for our students. I served in the Peace Corps as a volunteer teacher and teacher trainer in China from 2004 to 2006. Before that I had been working in communications for the Smithsonian Instititution and other non-profits in the Washington, DC area.

I enjoy hiking with my wonder dog Andy, traveling, learning languages, photography, cooking, media production, reading non-fiction, and hanging with my family and friends.

I'm currently pursuing TESOL's certificate for online teaching as well as an M.S. in organization development and knowledge management from GMU.

I'm looking forward in this class to working with a diverse group of educators, expanding my understanding of multiliteracies and finding out more of what's possible with technology integration!
